Why it Matters

Education is not only a basic human right, it is an engine for poverty eradication, and a force for peace.

– UN Sustainable Development Goals, 2019

Access to good education is one of the basic Human Rights. However, many governments around Africa are finding it impossible to provide this basic service with many schools facing the same difficulties – poor funding, lack of adequately trained teachers, poor and unsafe conditions and inequality of opportunities resulting in poor quality education, low enrolment and attainment rates, and general education system failure.

Facts and Figures:

  • Globally, over 265 million children and youth around the world do not go to school.
  • More than half of children that have not enrolled in school live in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • 617 million youth worldwide lack basic mathematics and literacy skills
